- What genre of fashion inspires you when designing looks for the House of Govinda?
I’d say my designs for the House of Govinda are heavily inspired by the military, admiral, and army aesthetic. I was always in awe of how industry greats like Karl Lagerfeld and Shantanu and Nikhil in India imbued such commandeering and authoritative elements into looks that showcase great design harmony. Another influence that my designs have become synonymous with is the tone-on-tone look. The appeal a simple monochrome colour scheme can illicit- whether it be a bandhgala set or a classic suit, is phenomenal as it lets the person own the clothes and not the other way round. I believe any design should accomplish one primary goal: to highlight and uplift the features of the wearer. They should act as a canvas through which one can communicate their personality. And that leads to the overarching philosophy of our brand as well- Person first, product later. And that’s what sets the House of Govinda apart.
- Govinda describes his style essence as…
No accident! While my personal style is what one would call ‘classic’, there is a lot of thought that goes into the outfit that I choose for the day. The classic style is often written off as “simple”, but to me it’s about knowing that a simple tone-on-tone look will enhance my features the best. For me, the understated classic looks when paired with the right statement piece- like the right pair of shoes or a belt, can elevate my everyday looks to a level of chic that’s work appropriate. Some might think that there’s a divide between my personal style and my designs here at the House of Govinda, but it’s essentially about the what you need your clothes to do for you. I’m usually dressing my clients for life’s big moments, so their outfits scream grandiosity and subtle drama. In the end, fashion is an extension of oneself. There’s only one guiding principle that I think of when it comes to style- that of serving your purpose.
- How it all started....?
I often find myself repeating the phrase, "Some of the most cherished aspects of life arise from unexpected circumstances and the process of trial and error." My upbringing was primarily shaped by my mother, and having a strong female influence instilled in me a deep appreciation for form, fit, structure, and color. Over the years, I honed these influences into my unique style through a journey filled with experimentation and resilience. I had an innate passion for experimenting with different looks, even if it meant becoming the subject of jokes among my brother and friends. To me, the only judgment that mattered was whether it felt right. Eventually, I learned to push past the fear of "What will people think?" and began to define the distinctive sense of style that I proudly wear today. This willingness to embrace new ideas and endure the trials and errors of fashion led me to understand what works, for whom, and why. People often misconstrue the act of dedicating time to one's appearance as vanity. However, I believe it signifies a true love for oneself and for communicating through personal style. While most of my peers pursued formal education in the field of fashion and design, I embarked on a different path. My young adult years, devoid of formal training, were a period of self-exploration and experimentation that solidified the design aesthetics I embody today. This process made me intuitive, granting me a unique perspective unburdened by the latest fashion trends. In the end, whether you are formally trained in fashion or not, it remains a significant part of conveying your story each day, one cryptic piece of information at a time. It's that art of sharing your authentic narrative that defines what the House of Govinda represents today. Govinda Mehta, Creative Director the House of Govinda.
